What is Chemical Peel?

These three facial offenders can leave skin tone uneven, create unwanted sun spots or scars, and inevitably result in wrinkles. A chemical peel uses a combination of pharmaceutical grade ingredients to exfoliate the skin as well as stimulate new collagen production. These chemical skin peel can be light, intermediate or deep depending on your individual needs and how much down time you are willing to accept. The peel will help refresh the skin and achieve a smoother texture and brighter, more even complexion. The greatest benefit beside maintaining your skin and fighting aging is how great you feel without the blemishes and imperfections that were previously present.

Non-Invasive Treatment
Chemical peels are
nonInvasive. Some people may have heard them referred to as chemexfoliation or derma peeling. Whatever the term being used, a chemical solution is used to remove the outer layers of facial skin during the in-office procedure. Chemical peels may also be used on the hands or neck. Treatment can improve acne and the appearance of acne scars, sun spots, wrinkles, and irregular skin pigmentations, as well as other flaws in the skin.
Chemical Peel Process
Different depths of the skin may be addressed based on the results the patient would like to achieve. Chemical peels are categorized as light, intermediate, or deep. Each uses a different chemical solution. The deeper the peel is, the more dramatic the results. Even light peels are able to provide beautiful results after multiple treatments. Light chemical peels remove the outer layer of skin, the epidermis. They are used to treat fine lines, acne, dryness and uneven skin tone. Intermediate depth peels remove the epidermis and the upper layers of the middle layer of skin, the dermis. Deeper wrinkles and acne scars and irregular skin pigmentation are treated this way. With a deep chemical peel, the epidermis and lower levels of the dermis are targeted. The deepest scars and wrinkles are addressed with deep peels. Prior to application of the chemicals, the face will be cleaned and measures will be taken to protect the eyes. post peel skin care will be discussed. The Melanage peel is a wonderful treatment designed not only to exfoliate but also to address hyperpigmentation. Downtime with this peel is experienced as flaking or peeling, which is usually done by day 5. This peel yields results equal to IPL when it comes to pigmentation but has the added advantage of chemically stimulating collagen production.
Recovery Time
The amount of downtime required depends on the type of chemical peel that is used. Light peels have no downtime and can be done monthly for optimal skin health. Both men and women can make an excellent candidate for a Chemical Peel treatment. Some skin types are not right for the procedure, though. These may include Asian skin, pale and skin/red hair, or patients with a history of scarring. At the consultation appointment with Dr. Kessler, it will be determined if a Chemical Peel is the right procedure for your individual situation.

A Chemical Peel generally involves a mild stinging sensation. A ‘light’ Chemical Peel is generally painless, requiring no anesthetic. A ‘medium’ or ‘deep’ Chemical Peel can result in mild to moderate discomfort.

07 What type of anesthesia is used during a Chemical Peel?
During the ‘light’ Chemical Peel, no anesthetic is required. The ‘medium’ or ‘deep’ Chemical Peel may cause slight discomfort, therefore a topical or local anesthetic will be provided.

A typical Chemical Peel will take between 15 and 30 minutes to complete.

09 What can I expect during my recovery from a Chemical Peel?
The recovery time from a Chemical Peel will depend on the extent of the treatment. A ‘light’ peel may require no downtime, while a deeper peel may take anywhere from two days to two weeks. Patients will be given specific instruction for cleaning, moisturizing, and protecting the skin.

Patients will require anywhere from a day off from work, to a week or more. This will depend on the extent of peel performed, as well as the individual patient’s skin.

11 Can I have more than one Chemical Peel?
Yes, since the results from a Chemical Peel are not permanent, a repeat treatment can be performed. Patients should wait for at least six weeks before returning for another treatment.

12 What are the risks of a Chemical Peel?
A Chemical Peel, when performed by an experienced medical professional, is considered extremely safe. Rarely, complications may occur. If so, these can include infection, pigmentation changes, and scarring.
