Blu-U Light Therapy for Women
Conveniently located to serve Newport Beach
What is BLU-U?
Is a device which uses blue light to treat acne and when combined with Levulinic acid can treat precancerous skin conditions. Photodynamic therapy is the technical name for the treatment. Blue-light Photodynamic therapy is FDA approved, as a drug-free and pain-free non-invasive procedure that helps kill bacteria that can cause acne and inflammation. It turns out that acne causing bacteria, Propionibacterium, are particularly sensitive to the blue light wavelength. For individuals with acne who are adverse to the idea of taking antibiotics this is a great treatment option. Severe acne can also be treated with Levulan but it will not be left on the skin as long as for premalignant lesions.
Levulan is an acid which binds to abnormal skin cells like those found in actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis and precancerous skin cells. The skin is treated in the morning with the Levulan and you return to the office in the afternoon to sit beneath the blue light. The bound acid is activated by the light and the lesions are removed. Blu u therapy is a safe procedure that chemically removes abnormal cells from the superficial layers of the skin. Unlike individual spot removal this treatment address seen and unseen abnormalities of the face and is used for the prevention of skin cancer.
The Blu-U Procedure for Premalignant Lesions
When treating mild to moderate acne, blu u treatment can be performed once or twice per week in sessions that last 16 minutes. There is no downtime and this can be done in conjunction with your acne skin care products to maintain blemish free skin. Severe acne can benefit from levulan but this would only be placed for 30 minutes prior to exposure to the blue light.
When treating actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis and premalignant lesions from sun damage, levulan needs to be placed a minimum of 6 hours before exposure to the blue light. Typically you will come to the office for the application of the Levulan and return home. During this time you must minimize exposure to sunlight which can activate the acid. Upon returning to the office you will be placed under the blue light with a fan for 16 minutes. During this time a fan can keep you cool as the heat builds from the activation of the acid. The discomfort is minor and requires no anesthesia. It can also be done on all skin types.
Blu-U Recovery
Blu-U results in long-lasting improvement of skin health. There is no recovery from Blue light treatment alone. When Levulan is used the skin is treated with moisturizer and will peel. This usually takes 3-5 days of recovery before returning to work. Exercise routines or other strenuous activities should be avoided during this 5 day period. You should expect redness and possibly even mild blistering of the targeted areas. Avoiding the sun will help the skin to heal as quickly as possible. After healing the skin appears hydrated and healthier and a good skin care regimen can help maintain those results for the long term.
