Tummy tuck surgery is a serious operation that requires a lot of research and planning. There is a lot of information circulating on the Internet regarding the procedure, but not all of it is true. In this blog post, Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. Rob Kessler separates tummy tuck facts from fiction.
Tummy tuck is for weight loss.
Fiction. Tummy tuck surgery is a body contouring procedure that removes loose skin that is often left in the abdominal area after weight loss. If you wish to lose weight, Dr. Kessler recommends you do so through diet and exercise or bariatric (weight loss) surgery before having tummy tuck surgery.
Tummy tuck can improve your posture.
Fact. Extra belly fat and weak abdominal muscles put additional strain on the back and may cause you to slouch or hunch over frequently. Repairing the abdominal muscles gives the spine the support it needs for better posture.
Tummy tuck scars can’t be hidden.
Fiction. While tummy tuck does leave some scarring, it can be easily hidden and minimized when done by a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Rob Kessler. During the procedure, Dr. Kessler typically makes the incisions right above the pubic hairline, from hipbone to hipbone. The subsequent scarring is usually concealed beneath a bikini or panty line.
Tummy tuck can remove stretch marks.
Fact. Yes, tummy tuck surgery can eliminate some stretch marks, but only if they are located on excess skin that will be excised. This can dramatically improve the overall look of the abdomen.
Liposuction and tummy tuck surgery are one in the same.
Fiction. Liposuction and tummy tuck surgery are two separate body contouring procedures with different purposes. Tummy tuck removes excess skin on the abdomen while liposuction can be performed on several body areas to remove stubborn fatty deposits. Often times, patients choose to incorporate liposuction in their tummy tuck surgery to remove excess abdominal fat and contour the sides of the waist for a more beautiful result.
